Tons of
Fun in September!
What do
Beethoven, the Chicken Dance and the National Football League have
in common?
They give us fun excuses to
party in September!

Get out your
calendar and a nice bold pen and make note of these
fun activities
to do with your kids in honor of July! Each one is a
memory
in the making!
National Chicken Month
* Learn the Chicken Dance! Perform it with your friends in
front of an audience of parents.
* Have an egg hunt: Fill plastic eggs with candy and slips
of paper with chicken jokes or trivia written on them.
* Make your own comic strip with chickens as the main
characters.
National Honey Month
* Celebrate with a true connoisseur--read Winnie the Pooh
books and watch Pooh movies!
* If you’ve never tried it, honey makes a great ice cream
topping!
Hispanic Heritage
Month
* Make green, white and red paper chains to decorate your
home and yard.
* Remember, no celebration is complete without a
candy-filled piñata!
* Brush up on your Spanish-speaking skills. Buy a
translation book or an audiotape course, and practice,
practice, practice. Muy bueno!
Classical Music
Month
* Visit free outdoor symphonies in the park.
* Conduct a water orchestra: Fill drinking glasses with
varied amounts of water, and gently tap each glass with a
metal spoon. Each makes a different sound!
* Visit the library or surf the internet to learn more
about the classical masters (Beethoven, Bach, Strauss,
etc.).
Children's Books
Month
* Read to your child!
* Take the entire family to register for a library card.
* Stock your own in-house library! Visit garage sales to
find great deals on great reads.
* Host a book-swapping party and invite all of your friends.
Labor Day (Sept. 2)
* Play occupational charades: Write the names of various
jobs on slips of paper, and take turns acting them out. Ssh--no
talking!
* Start a dream job log. Think about what you want to be
when you grow up. Write your answer on a sheet of paper,
along with the date. Make it a Labor Day tradition to add to
the list each year with your new dream job. (Adults can play
this too!)
Grandparent's Day
(Sept. 8)
* Call Grandma and Grandpa! They enjoy receiving gifts and
cards from you, but hearing your voice means so much more.
* Create a special memory book by having each member of the
family write a down a special story or memory about your
grandparents on index cards. Store the cards in a decorated
recipe box; making it easy to add more stories.
* Start a family newsletter. Write monthly updates on your
family’s activities and achievements, and send them to
your grandparents. Present the inaugural edition on
Grandparent’s Day!
National Thank-You
Day (Sept. 16)
* Make a pleasant habit of writing thank-you notes to
people who give you gifts, or do something nice for you.
* Say “Thanks” with a bouquet of handpicked wildflowers
or tissue paper flowers.
National Football
League's 82nd birthday (Sept. 17)
* Watch a football game.
* Play tag or flag football in the yard.
* Make a football-shaped cake or cookies.
* Wear your favorite NFL team's jersey or t-shirt all day
to celebrate.
Good Neighbor Day
(Sept. 22)
* Offer to do yard work for an elderly neighbor.
* Pick up litter in your neighborhood.
* Plant flowers to brighten someone's day.
National Dog Week
(Sept. 22-28)
* Take your puppy to the park to play with other dogs.
* Take Fido for an extra long walk, letting him sniff every
tree, bush, lamppost and mailbox along the way.
* Pamper your pet with a warm bath and blow dry, and then
let them star in a photo shoot!
