Tons of Fun In October!
Halloween
isn’t the only reason to scream--
October is full of fun reasons to celebrate!

Get out your
calendar and a nice bold pen and make note of these
fun activities
to do with your kids in honor of July! Each one is a
memory
in the making!
Family History
Awareness Month
* Visit a local library, or surf the Internet, to find your
family's seal or coat of arms. Frame your find.
* Show off your family tree by creating a wall photo
display! Frame individual pictures or make a huge photo
collage.
* Interview your family members and record your findings in
a notebook. For a visual remembrance, videotape your
interviews and make copies to hand out at big family
gatherings.
National
Car Care Month
* Grab a rag and a bucket of soapy water and wash the
family car together as a family!
* Make a felt air freshener to hang from the rearview
mirror. Cut a flower, tree, or other shape from a piece of
felt. Sprinkle the felt with a few drops of essential oil
(vanilla, cinnamon, peppermint, etc.). Use a hole punch to
make a hole near the top, and thread a piece of yarn
through the hole for hanging.
National
Dessert Month
* Visit a favorite restaurant and order only desserts!
Order a few and share them as a family.
* Create your own unique dessert! How about caramel and
chocolate covered bananas sprinkled with gummy bears? The
possibilities are endless!
National
Pizza Month
* Invite friends over for a pizza-making-and-eating party!
* Try new and different toppings. Stop playing it safe with
pepperoni...try pineapple instead!
Charlie
Brown and Snoopy's Birthday (Oct.
2, 1950)
* Organize a play date for your children’s friends, and
watch Peanuts cartoons!
* Eat peanuts during the movie marathon!
* When you're happy, do the Snoopy dance! When you're sad,
do the Snoopy dance to get happy!
National
Newspaper Week (Oct.
6-12)
* Use newspapers to help younger children learn to read.
Focus on the headlines, at first, because they’re bigger
and easier to see.
* Start or participate in a newspaper recycling program.
* Become a hometown reporter! Practice writing different
kinds of articles such as investigative, human interest,
community events, and celebrity profiles.
Cowboy
Hall of Fame Day (Oct.
10)
* Visit a local library or surf the internet to learn about
what it was really like to live in the “old west.”
* Dress up in cowboy or cowgirl garb for the entire day!
Invite friends over for a western movie marathon.
* Attend a rodeo or visit a dude ranch or horse stables to
ride a horse for the first time!
National
Children’s Day (Oct.
13)
* Just have fun! Do continuous cartwheels or spin round and
round until you get dizzy and fall down!
* Don’t be afraid to get dirty and make a big mess! Make
mud pies!
* Talk to your children. Ask them what their hopes and
dreams are, and just listen.
National
Magic Week (Oct. 25-31)
* Read magic books or surf the internet to learn new magic
tricks that will amaze your friends.
* Make a magic wand by gluing small rhinestones and
streamers to an unsharpened pencil or a cardboard tube
(from wrapping paper or paper towels).
* Invite family and friends over to debut your new tricks
at a magic show!
Halloween
(Oct. 31)
* Dress up *with* your children when you join them
trick-or-treating.
* Instead of visiting strangers’ homes, arrange a block
party with a few trusted neighbors, or host a small party
in your home for the children.
* Many churches, fire stations and malls host Halloween and
fall festivals. They offer fun activities for the entire
family to enjoy.
