Fiction Is Fun Month
*Start your own family reading group: Read the same book and discuss it as a family.
*Create wacky sentence stories together: The first person says a sentence (One day, I followed a cat through a tiny doorway behind the flower shop.) Then, the next person makes up another sentence (I crawled through the doorway and down a long tunnel where it opened into a giant glistening cave filled with
waterfalls and piles of jewels.) Keep going until each person has contributed to the story.
National Iced Tea Month
*Open an iced tea stand instead of a lemonade stand!
*Serve fresh sun tea to your customers: Fill a glass gallon jug with water and a few tea bags. Set the jug in direct sunlight for a couple of hours. When the color is just right, your tea is ready! Add ice, a bit of lemon and sugar to taste.
*Try new flavors of teas that you've never tried before.
National Rose Month
*Visit a local nursery to learn about the many varieties of roses.
*Paint still-life pictures of roses and decorate your home with them.
*Help Mom and Dad plant a rose bush in your yard.
National Zoo and Aquarium Month
*Spend a day at your local zoo and aquarium. Bring along your sketch pad and draw the animals and sea creatures that you learn about.
*Display your drawings of the animals and fish in your house and invite friends and family over to view your indoor zoo and aquarium!
Superman's Birthday (June 1st)
*Rent Superman movies and cartoons for a movie marathon!
*Draw your own Superman comic strip.
*Throw Superman a birthday party, and invite your friends to dress up as their favorite super heroes!
National Yo-Yo Day (June 2nd)
*Start a yo-yo collection.
*Visit your local bookstore or surf the internet to find instructions on yo-yo tricks.
*Host a yo-yo trickster contest or show, with "Flight of the Bumblebee" playing in the background.
International Volunteers Week (June 2-8th)
*Contact your local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and volunteer your services as a family.
*Collect gently worn clothing, blankets and toys and donate them to a local church or Salvation Army.
*Volunteer at your local food bank to help replenish the food supply or to deliver meals to the elderly.
Party Party Day (June 6th)
*Host a dance party: Write the invitation information on the shiny side of a CD (use the free kind that come in the mail). Ask friends to bring their favorite tapes or CDs to dance to.
*Attend a party--any kind will do today!
*Make silly party hats: Use the hats as invitations and ask guests to wear the hats to the party.
Family History Day (June 9th)
*Conduct family interviews: Interview family members about their lives! Record the information with a tape recorder or with
a pen and paper.
*Create a family time capsule: Decorate the outside of a shoe box with pictures of your family and the current date. Fill the inside with newspaper clippings, photos, ticket stubs, and anything else that your family will enjoy seeing 5 or 10 years from now. Let Mom or Dad put the capsule away for safe keeping
instead of burying it in the yard.
*Visit the genealogy section of your local library and research your family tree, or even find your family crest.
National Little League Baseball Week (June 10-16th)
*Join a little league team.
*Attend a little league game.
*Spend an hour each day playing catch and learning the rules of the game.
National Flag Day (June 14th)
*Make a special display of the different flags the United States has used over the years.
*Decorate a cake with your favorite version of the flag.
*Host a Flag Day parade in your neighborhood: Invite friends to decorate their bikes, wagons, roller skates, skate boards, etc., with flags and patriotic symbols and have your very own parade!
Father's Day (June 16th)
*Write a Father's Day Top 10 List: List 10 reasons why your dad is the best! Make several lists and hide them around the house
for Dad to find throughout his special day.
*Take Dad on a picnic: Invite your closest friends and their dads to join you and your dad on a special Father's Day picnic! Along
with the food and drinks, be sure to bring Frisbees, balls to play
catch, a kite, and other fun things to enjoy with Dad.
*Spice up his favorite hobby: Does your dad like to play golf? Decorate a set of golf tees for him. Does he like to build things? Fill the pockets of a tool belt with his favorite candies and a few new tools that he's been wanting.
